Rebel Up! Soundclash #9, Friday 21st of December

Hi all,

Just before the holidays there will be a winter solstice Rebel Up! party, with a generous banquet of musical dishes to fill the tummies. From Amaterasu, Beiwe and Choimus to Yule, Zagmuk and Ziemassvētki, cultures and religions all over the world celebrate the shortest day and onset of the new astronomical year. This year we may humbly add ourselves to this list, as our next party takes place on Friday the 21st of December!

Thanks to everyone who came to the last edition, which was a very cozy and crowded one for sure, with very playful and psychedelic visuals and an exotic hodgepodge of rougher world music. Unfortunately we were enjoying the party a little too much ourselves to consequently ask people for the entrance fee. We ended up only receiving half of what we expected for the Casa Amazonia charity, which is why we will donate profits to them again this time.

Here's the info bit for next Friday:

Rebel Up! Soundclash #8, saturday 24th of November

Hi there,

Thanks to everyone who made the last Rebel Up! party such a big success, especially to Malorix for his wonderful broken world beats, and to Roberto, the humanoid in sheep's clothes, for his tastefully eclectic selection of well-spiced tunes.

Our resident nomads Seb and Maarten have left for their music documentation project in India, and so the torch has been passed to the next band of rootless bricoleurs passing by. Some of the tunes collected by the India-wallahs will be audible on the next Rebel Up, which will take place on Saturday the 24th of November. To alleviate the pains of autumn rains, we will once again be weaving our multifarious web of sounds and imagery, the transcultural tapestry integrating elements from North Pole to Equator to South Pole ... migratory sounds to be enjoyed under the warm and comfy OCCII roof.

As always, all profits will be donated to charity. We got a good amount of donations for Tamsarya project in Nepal last time, and this time we choose a project for the poor in South America with the association Casa Amazonia to help them open new classes for children in Guayaquil, Ecuador. (For more details you can check their website at www.casaamazonia.com.)

Here's the practical info-bit:

Tamsarya project and warm autumn sounds!

hey all,

On saturday we will donate the profits and collected money to Stichting Tamsarya. This organisation for Nepal has been shaped bya caring dutch woman over 10 years ago after she passed the region on bicycle and now has formed into a solid foundation, aimed to help the inland people of the mountain area of central Nepal. Huge mountain ridges and deep valleys make this region very inaccessible and therefore neglected by the state.

Many projects have already been succesfully completed or are still running smoothly. Money is ofcourse always needed to inject more funds into current projects or start new ones. Perhaps we can make it possible that more children from poor villages get education in better conditions. There is a school project that needs funding as the school has a lack of decent commodities while the pupils have to wade in ankle deep water. Repairs and renovations are already in the making, but our role here is to raise funds for school uniforms and supplies for the children. We hope to collect a fair sum to make this happen...and beyond. Do read more at www.tamsarya.nl

here some photo's to give an impression:

Below, as always, some warm pre sounds to warm up the ears...

Unknown Artist - Unknown Song (Sublime Frequencies: Folk and Pop sounds of Sumatra vol1)
Ni Ni Win Shwe - My Darling's Love Arrow (SF: Folk and Pop sounds of Myanmar/Birma vol1)
Judge Dread - Wine or Grind
Sobanza Mimanise - Kiwembo (V/A - Congotronics #2 Urb'n' Rumble)
Goran Bregovic - Kalasnjikov (OST Underground)

see you, soon.

Rebel Up Soundclash, saturday 20th of October :

Hi there all,

Thanks for coming out last time, lots of new faces and a good atmosphere to boot!

On Saturday the 20th we will return with more global fun as ever, lucky #7 eh!
This night marks a temporary last party for 2 of of our Rebel Up nomads, as they will pack their bags, burn everything behind them and set off to India for 6 months. So feel free to come and wave them goodbye with the white handkerchief. We are hoping to open up earlier this time around 21 ish to have a prolonged leaving party, which means more partytime and sweatiness for you!

There will be a special live performance by Malorix, who will play his broken beats alongside sounds of Bollywood queens, Berber kings and distorted Arabic pop shamboozle. The mishmash never stops (www.malorix.nl). Also, we'll be joined by Rotterdam nomad Roberto from the deep end of global sounds. This time we have lured him away from his radio show, here and here, to be with us in the flesh. yay.

Proceedings of the night will go to a charity still to named. We do are looking eastwards, with our eyes set on either a Nepalese, Bangladeshi or Indian organisation. We hope to know more by next week and fill you in about their social cause.

Hope to see you!

No worry though about the future, Rebel Up will steadily continue and new folks will step in to help the crew to keep the flame burning.
Next Rebel Up, possibly november 24th...stay tuned.

Ok below, you know the drill, the info bit... pass it on to friends and all, the word of mouth and touch of send button really helps us.

Next soundclash Friday 29th of June, with Maga Bo Live!

Hi there,

Big thanks to the handfull of wonderful people who came out on the 25th of May, despite it being a hot day and night, and still created a good atmosphere!

We will have another Rebel Up! Soundclash on Friday the 29th of June, which promises to be an even better one. Especially since we will have a special live guest: Maga Bo, all the way from Rio de Janeiro and currently touring Europe bringing his *Transnational Bass sound*!

We will again have the Igitego Inyange organization as our charity for this night, as we didn't raise much last time around due to the low turnout. So, let's give it another chance! Keep your coins, small change or bigger notes ready...any donation is a sweet gesture! See further project information in previous posts.

Friday 25th of May, Rebel Up! Soundclash party, our world turns to Rwanda this time!

Rebel Up Soundclash! #3. -We keep it going!!-

The chosen charity for friday the 25th is the Igitego Inyange project in Rwanda. This project has been initiated a few years ago by the Rwandese Anathalie Mukundwa and the Belgian VSO worker Vincent Thiry, to help a village in the poor Gahanda village region developing themselves in as many ways possible.

Their aim:
- To provide secundary education and arrange funds for university.
- Access to medical care for all , by paying insurance and visits at the doctor. A doctor has already been appointed to the village through donations.
- To build a centre in the town in the near future. This centre will serve as a medical and social centre and at the same time it provides the locals space to store, display and produce their handcrafts. Also tourist accomodation will be built to attract western visitors, so that locals can earn their livelihood through social tourism, without the intervention of package holiday agencies.

Please take a look at the Igitego Inyange website.
Below some impressions of Gahanda and the project.

Rebel Up! Soundclash #2, 28th of April

hey there!

Next saturday the 28th of april, the 2nd installment of the Rebel Up! Soundclash will be organised in OCCII.

Repeating the audiovisual fun, yet a different momentum alltogether. Exotic cultures will again meet northern hemispheres halfway and the plan remains unchanged: our golden winnings will still be donated to charity.

This time we selected the Chakana project in Bolivia.
Chakana is a Dutch organisation who
provide support to the poverty-stricken Aymara indians who live in the barren highlands. The project we support will be for building greenhouses, so that they can build their own veg crops without fear of bad seasons that often occur.
We will be happy to receive any donation one can spare. Nope, we're not fussy for the sake of good support. Especially combined with a party!

Party aftermath

Hi all,

-a week of radio silence, broken-

first, thanks to all you out there for coming out to the OCCII on the 17th!! You made this debut party a real success and by this feat we managed to raise about 300 sweet euro's! This will surely give the people at Grassroots Projects a sincere push in their Chiapas cause.

We truly had not expected this many people with happy feet, creating such a superb atmosphere. We counted more than 100 people after midnight, who turned the dancefloor into a sea of bodies, rocking straight till the end!
We are especially glad you folks enjoyed our diverse diasporic tunes and hereby once and for all acknowledging that world music styles should not be pigeonholed into ethnical corners or themes, but played with blood, sweat and tears!

Stay tuned here on the blog for more fun, as we are planning more nights in May and June!!
Plus, renowned international guest dj's who are fronting this diasporic style will join too!

April on the other hand, seems to be a inactive month, sorry for the wait.
But the blog will keep itself updated through audio and words. Perhaps a mix somewhere too.

Please pass the word onto your friends and so on. Keep in touch, drop us a line, whatever
Many thanks again.

ps: has anyone made photo's at the night? We would surely like to post them up here.

Grassrooted

Hi all,

We have a charity!

The profits made on saturday will be donated to the Chiapas Indians in Southern Mexico, who are struggling to support their families and their livelihood, since the Mexican government does not take sufficient care of this remote part of the country. The Indians have to build all their schools and hospitals themselves and for this they need support from the outside world.

Maybe some of you will have heard about the Zapatista movement uprising, which can be seen as one the first antiglobalists who stepped up for their rights when their govenment did not act on their issues. We at Rebel Up! feel that we need to support these rebelling indians in their righteous cause.

At the moment a hospital is being built nearby La Realidad, which is situated in the autonome area that is not controlled by the Mexican army anymore. Funding is seriously needed for the construction of this hospital and that's the chosen route our money will follow. This project is coordinated by Grassroots Projects, please scrobble their website for more info. We hope to see you saturday.

Let's go latino-coustic for now!

Trio Los Camperos De Valles - La Rosa

The Alvarados - Yo Soy Chicano

Sr. Zambrana - Assucar

Wednesday, 7 March 2007

Look uppa here!

.....and so it begins.

Saturday 17th of March, we will hold our 1st Rebel Up! Soundclash party at OCCII Amsterdam, which shall be our adopted base from now on. Hopefully bi-monthly.

It will kick off at 22:30 and will go on till late. Doors close at 4ish. The damage is 4 euro's but if you come in before 23:30 it's free in, though as profits will go to an earnest charity it would be great to make a donation instead. We leave people free in this choice, willfully and unrestricted.

The charity still has to be decided but if any of you fellow nomads and sympathizers know about a good social cause through your global perception, please leave a comment or contact us at Rebel Up! Speaking. Any recommendation is really appreciated and anticipated!

The flyer is arriving, steadily rolling from the presses as we speak and voila, result! -click click click to see full size-

Watch this space during the next 10 days. A mishmash ratatouille of songs, dances and stomps will soon appear to lift your spirits and to be taken into your own travel bag through empee's downloads. It's all out there really; strolling through the neverending mazes of global music, tucked-away, old and new alike, lurking to be discovered.

A bientot, hasta luego, bis bald, ate logo, tot snel......
